Silly Play Storytime

Silly Play Storytime

wowwwww it has been awhile since I last blogged! I have been busy with SRP and we took a storytime break for all of May and half of June but we are in the swing of things again! Our first storytime this summer was PLAY!  At the library we love reading and books but we also love Play :)

Silly Play Picture Books

Mr Tiger Goes Wild
Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown
Where is the Green Sheep
Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox
Tap the Magic Tree
Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson
Count the MonkeysCount the Monkeys by Mac Barnett, illus by Kevin Cornell

All of these books were perfect! Some other books you could do are:
Can You Make a Silly Face by Jan Thomas
Not a Box by Antoinette Portis
It’s a Tiger! by David LaRochelle, illus. by Jeremy Tankard
Oh, No! by Candace Fleming, illus. by Eric Rohmann
Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett, illus. by Adam Rex

Silly Play Songs

Any silly song from Laurie Berkner is perfect for this theme.  We did The Goldfish Song!

Herman the Worm is also my go to song, and will work especially well for the pre-school and school age crowd.  Instead of eating parents/grandparents I have Herman eat library books, my car, the library, etc..

Instead of a craft at the end of this storytime we did the parachute!  For some awesome parachute ideas check out Kendra’s blog!

All in all this was a very fun storytime!  This was planned right on the heels of the tragic news out of Orlando so it was great for me, and probably the adults in the room, to just play and laugh and have fun for a little bit.

Frog Storytime

Frog Storytime

Ribbit Ribbit! Today we had FROG storytime!  Frogs have been on my mind ever since I very recently learned about how frogs hibernate.

Frog Songs & Rhymes
The entire time I was planning this storytime I was reminded of summer camp…I can remember going on hikes and walks while singing some of these silly froggy tunes…

Mmm Ahh Went the Frog
source: aforementioned summer camp

Mmm ahh went the little green frog one day
Mmm ahh went the little green frog
Mmm ahh went the little green frog one day
and the little green frog went Mm ahh!

BUT we all know frogs go
(clap) Na na na na na
(clap) Na na na na na
(clap) Na na na na na
We all know frogs go
(clap) Na na na na na
and they don’t go Mm Mm Ah!

Bonus! Video of me singing it…

BONUS BONUS Jbrary also sang this song!(after I already recorded myself doing this song… should’ve checked with them first!)

Two Little Frogs
adapted by me from Two Little Blackbirds

Two little froggies sitting in the lake
One named Jane, and one named Jake
Swim away Jane, swim away Jake
Come back Jane, come back Jake!

Ribbit ribbit!

….and continue done until there are no frogs left
I made a story tube for this that I got from Librarian Vs. Storytime!

I printed off the frog image from My Cute Graphics!

We also always do The Goldfish Song by Laurie Berkner and Icky Sticky Bubble Gum by David Landau (the kids would probably revolt if we didn’t)

Frog Craft

This was definitely a crowd favorite! We made pop up frogs, using the template from The Craft Train!

Hat Storytime

Hat Storytime

Hats off for Hat Storytime!

I did this with a small group of pre-schoolers and it was a little bit longer than I usually have storytime and we did more stories and less songs/extension activities.

Hat Game

We didn’t really do any hat specific songs but we did do a little bit of a hide and go seek hat game.  I hid different kinds of hats (in plain sight) and the kids and I looked around until we found them.
You could also do this set to a song
“Oh where oh where has my party hat gone, oh where oh where could it be..” etc, with each hat.
Click on the link to open a PDF of each different hat, including a party hat, witch hat, construction hat, winter hat, pirate hate, purple hat, and cowboy hat!

where can my hat be

Every week (as I have mentioned many times before) I HAVE to do Icky Sticky Bubble Gum by David Landau, from his Kids and Kitties album. This week we added in The Goldfish Song from Laurie Berkner, from her Victor Vito album

Hat Craft
Since Dr. Seuss’s birthday is nearing we did a Cat in the Hat craft!  I have been trying to do more cutting activities with this group so we cut out our bowtie and pasted on our stripes.  I could have let them paste the stripes but I knew we wouldn’t have as much time this week so I did that beforehand. I’ve been all about those low prep crafts lately so this was perfect! To download the template I used for the bowtie and the cat’s face click here.

Elephant Storytime

Elephant Storytime

I just got Laurie Berkner’s We Are the Dinoaurs stuck in my head but instead it would go like WE ARE THE ELEPHANTS TROMPING TROMPING.

Anyways, Elephant Storytime!

We started out by practicing our elephant skills, including stomping, pretending to be huge, and of course using our trunks. After this we sang the opening song, Rickety Tickety.

(Didn’t actually read Elmer this week because we were running out of time and they were a little bit wiggly!)

Other Elephant Things

I just want to make a shoutout to Jen in the Library here. I planned this the morning before storytime and pretty much just used everything she did, with the exception of the books. I LOVE MY FELLOW LIBRARIANS.

I did use the rhyme with the elephants in the bathtub but did not have enough time to make the flannels that accompany it so I just printed some clip art ones out instead!

Elephants in the Bath Tub

You can download these adorable little elephants and their bathtub here! (PDF file)
All of the clipart was found on

Our craft, because I planned this last minute, was an elephant coloring sheet and an elephant connect the dots!

Fizz Boom Read: Electricity & Light Storytime- PreSchool

I was really stumped for more ideas for FIZZ BOOM READ for my pre-schoolers.  It seemed as if shapes/numbers/colors were just too simple.  AND THEN IT CAME TO ME (aka I went online and found this awesome starter by Storytime Secrets)

Electricity & Light Storytime Miss Meg's Storytime

Electricty & Light Storytime!

I started off by asking if they knew what electricity is and used a light switch as an example: “what happens when we turn the light switch off?”.  I then handed out glow sticks, turned the lights off, and we watched this video:

Mr Sun
(in sign language)
We have been doing this weekly in baby storytime and pre-school storytime using Sunflower Storytime’s awesome cheat sheet!

Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me.
Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Hiding behind a tree
These little children are asking you
To please come out so we can play with you.
Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Please shine down on,
please shine down on,
Please shine down on me.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Plug it in, Plug it in
Okay friends, this one has a backstory.  In 5th grade we had an electricity unit and there was a group project and we had to make a song about electricity.  This was the song my group made up.  In 5th grade.  That I still have memorized.  As do many people I went to school with.  IT IS AN EAR WORM.  Anyways, not sure if it was inspired by a song we heard or maybe the glade plug in commercials.  Also channeling a bit of my inner Jbrary here for this.

Plug it in, plug it in electricity
Plug it in, plug it in electricity
There are two kinds of electricity
Static and current electricity
Static builds charges in one place
Current flows through a conductor
Plug it in, plug it in electricity
Plug it in, plug it in electricity

Feel free to use this!  If you repost I just ask for credit :)

I also did an extension activity that will be in a later Flannel Friday post :)

For our craft I had this REALLY AWESOME electricity coloring page but I fail because I can’t find it again. So sorry.  If I happen upon it again I will update this. If not, just google “electricity coloring page” and there are some nice ones.

Fizz Boom Read: Weather – Pre School

I have storytimes on Tuesday and have the whole summer of themes planned out.  This past Tuesday was going to be Light & Electricity and I already had a good start on what I wanted to do… Then I got more into the planning and saw all this cool shadow puppet & glow in the dark stuff I could do so I put that storytime on the back burner and at the last minute decided to do a Weather Storytime!  I already planned a similar storytime for my CHILIS presentation in the spring so I had a good starting point on such a late change.

Weather Craft | Miss Meg's Storytime

CLSP manual, pg 45
Terrible picture– so sorry!  I just blew up and made copies of the raindrops and had ribbon. They wrote their last names on the cloud and each member of their family on each raindrop.  The parents really seemed to like this craft!
