Fizz Boom Read: Connecticut Animals Storytime- PreSchool

For our last Fizz Boom Read storytime of the summer I focused on animals that are native to Connecticut, where we live.  I told the kids that every animal we hear in the books and songs today can be found in Connecticut.  This was a really fun storytime because the kids liked sharing what animals they had seen!

Connecticut Animals in Picture Books

Baby Bear Counts One
Baby Bear Counts One by Ashley Wolff
That is Not a Good Idea
That is NOT a Good Idea by Mo Willems
A Frog in the Bog
A Frog in the Bog by Karma Wilson
Bats at the Library
Bats at the Library by Brian Lies

All of these were big hits!  I am already a huge Baby Bear… fan after Baby Bear Sees Blue so I was excited to be able to use the newest one in a storytime.  Willems is always a big hit and parents and kids alike got a real kick out of the end of That is NOT a Good Idea.

Songs & Rhymes

Grey Squirrel
(I have also used this song in Rainbow Storytime and changed the squirrel color)

Grey squirrel, grey squirrel
shake your bushy tail!
Wrinkle up your funny nose
Then put a nut between your toes!
Grey squirrel, grey squirrel
shake your bushy tail!

There Was a Little Turtle
credit: King County Library System

There was a little turtle (make fist w both hands)
He lived in a box (make a box with both hands)
He swam in a puddle (make swimming motions)
He climbed on the rocks (use your fingers to climb up your arm)
He snapped at a mosquito (clap hands)
He snapped at a flea (clap hands)
He snapped at a minnow (clap hands)
He snapped at me (clap hands)
He caught the mosquito (grab with your hand)
He caught the flea (grab with your hand)
He caught the minnow (grab with your hand)
But he didn’t catch me! (shake finger)

OF COURSE, since Foxes live in Connecticut we HAD to do “What Does the Fox Say” by Ylvis.  I showed the music video and the kids had a lot of fun copying the dance moves from the video. 10/10- would do slightly outdated and overplayed pop song in storytime again.

Other Activity’s

I used this song from Storytime Katie and made it into a visual rhyme/song (I ended up more saying it then singing to the tune):

You Might See Some…
(Tune: Did You Ever See a Lassie?)

If you’re ever in the forest,
The forest, the forest,
If you’re ever in the forest,
You might see some deer
(The extra animals I used: Skunk, Robin, Milk Snake, Great Horned Owl, Chipmunk)

You can download the pictures of the animals, with their names HERE! (google doc)

This was a really easy one– I just gave the kids paper and crayons and told them to draw an animal they might see (or have seen!) in Connecticut.  We had some very creative squirrels, fox, birds, etc..
